Join Hilary Burden at the Afterword Cafe for the release of Undersong, co-published by Forty South Publishing.

What happens when we stop and listen to the ever-present hum of nature, to Country, to the undersong?

Celebrating the stories of Tasmanian landscapes and environments, through the journeys of Indigenous and non-Indigenous women, Undersong is a Tasmanian journey into Country.

Hilary Burden’s book explores the relationship to Country of several women of Tasmania, including herself, Aunty Patsy Cameron and historical figures Louisa Anne Meredith and Marianne North, among others. Separated by time but not place, the women in this non-linear, narrative non-fiction work all share a deep connection to this island at the bottom of the world.

The best-selling author of the memoir A Story of Seven Summers, Burden has in fact been leaning closer to nature, to wild places for nearly two decades now. Her newest work therefore becomes an act of quiet, gentle rebellion in the face of an unconscious handwringing that inhibits non-Indigenous Australians from exploring their own journey towards connection to Country, their own role in decolonisation.

Undersong encourages us to pause and listen while confronting the difficult terrain that is living on unceded lands here in Australia.

British-born Tasmanian Hilary Burden is an author, journalist and broadcaster. With a Diploma in Gender, Society and Culture and a BA in English/Politics, her career spans international and national publications. Her memoir, A Story of Seven Summers, was published by Allen & Unwin in 2012; Hilary also co-authored How Wild Things Are (2021) and the upcoming Visionary – Gardens and Landscapes for our Future with Claire Takacs (2024). Hilary’s first Tasmanian perfume under the label Undersong will launch later in 2024.

The book will be launched by Chris Champion, editor at Forty South. Hilary will be in conversation with Dr Rayne Allison, historian, and assistant publisher at Forty South Publishing.
