The award-winning Gunyah Goondie + Wurley: The Aboriginal Architecture of Australia is the only continental survey of this country’s First Nations’ innovative architecture. It explores the range and complexity of Indigenous-designed structures and spaces, from minimalist shelters to semi-permanent houses and villages, debunking false perceptions of early Aboriginal constructions and settlements.

Built on decades of research and field work and richly illustrated with rare photographs, Gunyah Goondie + Wurley offers insight into the lifestyles and cultural heritage of Australia’s Indigenous peoples, and how they combine to have a dynamic influence on this country.

Fullers Bookshop, in partnership with EmAGN Tas (Emerging Architects & Graduates Network) is thrilled to welcome to nipaluna/Hobart the book’s author, Paul Memmott AO. Paul is an architect, anthropologist, and author renowned for his groundbreaking work on the Indigenous architecture of Australia. Paul’s extensive research offers insights into the intricate relationship between Indigenous Australian communities and the spaces they inhabit, shedding light on the ways in which architecture reflects cultural values, social dynamics, and the enduring connection between people and their ancestral lands.

Paul will be joined in conversation by Mat Hinds from Taylor + Hinds Architects. Mat’s (and partner Poppy Taylor’s) ongoing works reflect a commitment to cultural understanding, community engagement, and the integration of Indigenous perspectives into the built environment. Completed in 2017, their project, krakani lumi – wukalina, is profiled in Gunyah Goondie + Wurley.

The evening will be held on the lands of the muwinina and palawa peoples of lutrawita/Tasmania.

This event will now be held at the RACV Hobart Hotel.
